Objective To investigate the role of Survivin gene in colorectal carcinoma and connection with microvessel density(MVD) and its clinical significance. Methods The expression of Survivin and MVD was detected by immunohistochemical method in 48 cases with colorectal carcinoma. Results Survivin expression was positive in 25 cases(52.1%), while no expression was detected in adjacent normal tissues. The expression of Survivin significantly correlated with histological differentiation and lymph node metastasis (P<0.05,P<0.01). MVD was higher in the cases lymph node metastasis than those without (P<0.01). The colorectal carcinoma which expressed both the Survivin and MVD were more inclined to occur lymph node metastasis. Conclusion The expression of Survivin and MVD has a significant correlation to the biological behavior in colorectal carcinoma. Detection of Survivin expression may be valuable for diagnosing colorectal carcinoma, and evaluating malignancy extent and prognosis.
