Caldwell is the hero in Updike's novel The Centaur, who shows the unity of two opposite factors of humbleness and tragedy, Though he has a petty and low position, he conveys the mercy of God and defends the God's seat in the world by his own selfless sacrifice. His solidity and suffering express the idea that the novel is not only an ode to hero but also an elegy to the modern people.
