Abstract The tumor infiltrating MNC were investigated in 51 brain tumors by immunohistochemistry. It was found that most of them were CD4 and CD8 T cells. The densities of CD4 and CD8 T cells were correlated positively with that of macrophases and negatively with the tumor size. The mean value of CD4/CD8 was 0.85.In the gliomas, the density of CD8 T cells was statistically lower than in meningiomas(P<0.05).Only in 9 and 7 cases were a few B cells and NK cells found respectively. These results suggest that CD4,CD8 T cells and macrophages play a major role in immunoresponse against brain tumors and that it is possible all of brain tumors inhibit CD4 subset, gliomas also inhibit CD8 subset selectively, and these tumors and host immune system restrain each other. In addition, the local immune status of brain tumors is not affected by the anatomical site where tumors occur or the level of expression of ki-67,HLA-Dr and CD25 in the tumorinfiltrating T cells.
