This thesis analysis the relation between the characteristic features of Malaysian urban architecture and its history, culture as well as religion, and introduces the successful experiences acquired by Malaysian architects in the preservation of historical buildings and in the creation of local modern architecture. It tries to expound that in the face of the confilict between modernness and tradition, it is essential for architects to study the 'context' thoroughly. Only in this way can lively modern architecture be created, which is born of local culture, containing useful content and form.
