he polymerase reaction(PCR)was used to detect human parvovirus B19 DNA ina panel of sera from hospitalized children.Small portion of each 100 serum samples weremixed,heat inactivated,and tested.The positive pools of each 100 mixed serum samples wererestested in pools of 10 and finally identification of the individual positive sample was carriedout by PCR amplification of 10 separately.Of 1 300 serum specimensanalyzed,8(0.6%)were found positive by the sequential PCR.The result indicates thatparvovirus B19 infection exists in Chinese children.This method has proven to reliable anduseful for large-scale screening of clinical specimens and for epidemiological survey.
