In the merit evaluation of marine engines, a comprehensive approach based on principles of techno-economy is advocated. Following a survey on the 'external' and 'internal' factors which affect both the production and operation costs, the Authors proposed to use 'Iife cycle cost' as criterion for evaluation. In order to achieve optimal economic effect, technical design, policy decision and management mesaures are equally important.
