马克思科学地揭示的资本范畴的内涵是认定资本为价值增殖的生产方式、运行机制、经济结构，是一个具有多层次性与多维性的复杂系统。由于市场经济本身是资本化的经济形式，所以社会主义市场经济也适用资本范畴，更深的原因是现实中的社会主义与资本同处于一个历史大阶段，因而二者具有耦合性。
