全球旋回地层学是指在对全球沉积岩进行综合系统研究之基础上，通过估算沉积盆地中源于物源区的沉积物类型和沉积环境条件变化，来预测地层学特征的一种过程－结果模型。其研究内容包括对全球地质演化时期全球海平面变化、全球气候条件、全球构造运动、全球古地理背景、全球沉积环境特征、全球古生物事件及全球矿产形成过程进行动态模拟，强调古气候在地质记录中的意义；注重沉积记录的全球同时性研究；强调各种事件在沉积作用中的意义；注重矿产资源分布的全球成因特征研究；注重多学科的相互渗透和综合研究；研究兴趣从地球本身转向地球外部世界。

Global cyclostratigraphy is a process-response model that permits stratigraphy tobe predicted by forecasting the variation of sediment yielded from the provenance area andthe changes in the depositional conditions within the basin on the base of systematical research result of global sedimentary rocks.Its research focuses on dynamic modelling of eustatic changes of sea level,global paleoclimatical condition,global tectonics,global paleogeography,global sedimentary environment,global paleontology,and global mineral resource origination,etc.It is characterized by:①emphasizing the importance of paleoclimate to geologicalrecords;②laying stress on global research of sedimentary records;③attaching importance tovarious events in sedimentation Processes;④Paying attention to the research of global origination features of mineral resource distribution;⑤laying stress on the research of multiplesubjects and cross-and inter-discinplines;③transferring research interest from the earth itselfto the outer space.
