MoO_3·B2O_3/SiO2 catalysts for selective oxidation of methane to formaldehyde was investigated on a fixed-flow reactor. The reaction was carried out at atmospher pressure by using O_2 as the oxidant. The results of these experiments indicate that the addition of B_2O_3 can in crease the selectivity for formaldehyde. Furthermore, B_2O_3 is advantageous to the dispersion of MoO_3 over the silica surface, For the various B_2O_3 contents added to MoO)3/SiO_2, 5% B_2O_3 shows the highest activity and selectivity. 1% conversion of methane and about 5 0% selectivity for formaldehyde can be obtained over this catalyst at 610℃. It has also been found that high calcination temperature can benfit the dispersion of MoO_3 over the support surfaces. These experimental results are correlated with the properties of catalysts which have been charecterized by XRD, TPR, CO_2-TPD.
