During the 4th quarter of the year 1994, the global seismicity appeared at high level after remaining at medium level for more than one year. As in 1993, the global seismicity center is still in the seismic belt of the northwest Pacific Ocean, and trench shallow earthquakes successively occurred in the Kuril Islands and the sea area off eastern Honshu, Japan. The largest earthquake of the globe occurred in the northwest region of the Pacific Ocean during the two years, 1993 and 1994. Some strong earthquakes occurred in surrounding regions of the Philippine sea. The situation that a large earthquake will occur in the sea trough region off southern Japan is drawing nearer. There are increasing indications of seismicity in the eastern part of the Chinese mainland, and in 1995 there will be new develobments of seismicity in North China. During this quarter the seismicity on the American seismic belt and the Eurasian seismic belt became calm, and no earthquakes with M 7. 0 occurred in the Oceanic Island-Arcs.
