Effect of passive smoking on the precordial Doppler bubble grade were observed in 36 guinea pigs exposed to 13 000 m simulated altitude for 20 min. The guinea pigs were divided into 3 groups. A: inhaling smoke from 1 cigarette in a small chamber for 15 min;B:2 cigarettes, 30 min;C: control. Moving bubbles within the circulating blood were monitored by precordiol Etoppler ultrasound during the chamber exposure the bubble scores were graded according to Newman's method. The results showed that no significant change were observed in bubble grades and its appearance time in groups A and B as compared with group C(x = 2.9953 P>0.05). The results suggest that passive smoking just before exposure to altitude may not be a factor increasing the danger of bubble formation.
