Abstract This paper presents a class of implicit A-stable or L-stable r-point r th order single-block methods for solving initial value problems of stiff ODEs, which requires the same amount of computation work as the linear r-step method. Numerical examples and analyses indicate that it is suitable for solving stiff initial value problems, at least when requirement of accuracy is not too high, or workload of computation of the right function f is less than that of the inverse of the matrix.
