In 1956, The Third Eye by Tuesday Lobsang Ramps, ostensibly alama born of a wealthy Tibetan family, became a bestseller. It was the purported memoir of his life in Tibet. Prior to his death in 1981, Lobsang Rampa published 12 more books on Tibet, but none matched the successof The Third Eye. It later transpired that Lobsang Pampa was the pen name of Cyril Hoskins, son of a plumber and born in Devon, England. Yet The Third Eye is still widely read by innocents believing its author to have been a Tibetan religious master.
