Ernest Hemingway is one of the most influential American writers in the 20th century. Seemingly simple and natural, his style in novels is actually polished and tightly controlled, but highly suggestive and connotative, pioneering a generation of writing style. Hemingway develops the style of colloquialism, revealing the innermost activities of figures with concise, conventional words and repeated mannerisms; omitted and “telegraph-like” dialogues shorten language in a terse, connotative way; these illustrate his “iceberg”analogy —— to set down exactly every particular kind of feeling without any authorial comments, and without conventionally emotive language. “Less ismore.”
