Puritanism plays an important role in all of Nathaniel Hawthorne＇s works. He saw Puritanism as cruel and inhuman; therefore, the society under Puritanism was “shrouded in blackness, ten times black.” In addition to the cruel and evil nature of Puritan heritage,Hawthorne intended to reveal in his works the positive side of human nature ： dignity and righ-teousness.
