On the Connotation of the Chinese National Spirit and Its Inheritance and Development

江泽民同志在十六大报告中,把5000多年发展形成的中华民族精神高度概括为“以爱国主义为核心的团结统一、爱好和平、勤劳勇敢、自强不息的伟大民族精神”。这种精神是悠久的中华文明历史精华在当代的凝聚和沉淀,是艰苦卓绝的革命斗争历史精华在当代的凝聚和沉淀,也是新时期新实践精华在当代的凝聚和沉淀。中华民族精神是一个有着丰富内涵的与时俱进的概念,它在继承中发展,在发展中继承,既具有传统性,又具有时代性,是历史传统精神、革命传统精神和新时期精神的有机统一。

Comrade Jiang Zemin,in the 16th National Congress report, summarizes Chinese national spirit which has been evolved during the more than five-thousand years＇ history to be ＂a great national spirit centering on patriotism and featuring unity and solidarity, love of peace, industry, courage and ceaseless seLf-improvement. ＂ This kind of spirit is the condensation and sediment of historical quintessence of the long Chinese civilization, the condensing and sediment of historical quintessence of the extremely hard and bitter revolution , and the condensing and sediment of the new practice quintessence of new period expressed in the contemporary. The Chinese national spirit is a concept with keeping pace with times and abundant intension. It develops in inheriting, in the same while inherits in developing. In a word, the traditional and epochal spirit is an organic unity of the historical traditional spirit, the revolutionary traditional spirit and the new period spirit.
