Preliminary Research on Smectite Clay in the West of Suzhou,Jiangsu Province

Smectite clay located in the kaolin distribution district of Yanshan,a newly-discovery rock in the west of Suzhou,is investigated by the examination of thin section and differential,chemical,spectrum and electron microscope analysises. The results show that the smectite clay in the area is composed of mineral aggregate of Al-smectite containing microcomponent such as kanlinite,hydromica.The chemical composition of smectite is SiO2 51.61%,Al2O3 26.87%,K2O 0.078% Na2O 0.020%,CaO 0.87%.MgO 0.96%,H2O+11.38%.The formation of smectite is closely related to the complex geological factors including magmatic rocks,faulted structures,hydrothermal solution,alternation and weathering leach.Al-smectite,a kind of rare non-metallic mineral,is very valuable for chemical,building material and light industries and should be developed as soon as possible due to convenient communication and good ore quality as well as lower mining cost.
