The Eunuchs & the Political Situation of Dazhong Period in Tang Dynasty

会昌末宣宗之立,并非如史籍所言系宦官贪其易制之“误立”,而是双方互为援引之结果。宣宗大中年间,宦官集团凭借拥立之功,广泛参与甚至主导相关事务,攫取大量政治、经济权益,对大中政局产生了深刻影响。

With a study on tablet inscriptions such as that of eunuch Meng Xiourong in Tang Dynasty and based on examinations and analyses of historical events before and after his enthronement, this paper contends that Emperor Xuanzong ascended the throne in the late Huichang Period because of the colluding efforts between Xuanzong and the eunuchs, which is in disagreement with the belief that it was only a “mistaken compromise” out of the eunuchs＇ desire to take advantage of the new enthronement, as stated in ancient historical documents. Consequently, snatching great political and financial gains, the eunuchs＇ cohort exerted profound influences on the political situation of the Dazhong Period through their participation and even domination in a wide range of affairs.
