Notwithstanding its great diversity of styles, forms, themes, and functions, the theatre of today has its roots in a basic need to give meaning to the workings of the universe. This suggests that theatre is a social art based on doubt and questioning. 1) From earliest times, man has sought to understand the cycle of nature, the progression from birth to death, and the forces that drive him. Indeed, this understanding has been necessary to man’s survival on Earth, particularly when his environment has become hostile or he has had to face natural cataclysms.
