The World War II was a watershed for the development of Australian diplomacy and defence. Before the war, the traditional relationship between Australia and Britain and the protective sense by the Empire of Great Britain, made Australian diplomacy to be peripheral situation all the time. As a result, any country other than the U.K. was unlikely to be involved in Australia's diplomatic field. The World War II has changed the traditional diplomatic pattern; the establishment of the diplomatic relations between Australia and the Soviet Union was one of important events during this process of change. The normalization of relations between those two countries not only had been the result of the examination of relationship and efforts contributed by politicians and diplomats of both sides from the view of strategy, but also the embodiment of the improvement of the relationship between Britain and the Soviet Union in a sense. The establishment of diplomatic relations between those two countries not only reflected their interests on security, but was also a main clue and motive force to the development of international relations, and at the same time certified the complexity and subtlety of international relations against a special background of war.
