Most patients want to know the nature of their disease and the likely treatments, side-effects and prognosis. Those who do not wish to know such details often include the elderly, those with a poor prognosis, and individuals from deprived areas. The extent to which patients perceive the information given to them as adequate for their needs has been linked to psychological adjustment. Patients who feel they received too much or too little information are more likely to develop a major depressive or generalized anxiety disorder within the next year.
