The theory of Conceptual Metaphor holds that metaphor is not a lingnistic matter but a cognitive phenomenon. It represents a way of thinking, providing the most essential means of understanding abstract concepts. By applying the theory in the fields of poetry, moral politics, philosophy and mathematics, George Lakoff, the initiator of this theory, provides strong evidence for the fundamental status of conceptual metaphors in human cognition.
