17世纪,中国东南沿海率先展开了由传统自给自足自然经济向以海洋经济为导向的商品经济过渡的结构性转型。郑氏海商集团依傍这一得天独厚的社会环境,得以发展为私人海上贸易的龙头。其发展虽与西方新兴资本主义海上贸易势力的发展特点有许多相似之处,但从其发展轨迹来看,走的是一条完全中国式的市场经济发展的道路。由于历史条件和机遇等原因,郑氏海商集团无力改变中国封建社会长期延续的走向,但为台湾地区的开发和社会经济文化的发展及抵御外敌等方面作出了一定的贡献。应在中国史中给予其一定的地位。

In the 17th century, the Chinese southeast coastal region took the lead in a structural transformation for transitioning into commodity economy from a traditional self-sufficient natural economy to the one with overseas-orientation. Relying on such a uniquely favorable social condition, the Zhengs overseas trade group could develop itself to be a leading private trader over the seas. Although it had not a few similarities as compared to the rising forces of western capitalism of its trade on the seas, it took a total Chinese way of developing market economy as it is seen by its traces of development. Owing to historical conditions and chances, the Zhengs overseas trade group was unable to change the direction, which was protracted long in China＇s feudal society, but it contributed to Taiwan region＇s development in society, economy and culture. Some certain status should be given to the Zhengs group in the history of Chinese social economy.
