The phrase “getting along well with others but holding his own views” is from the book Lun Yu. Zi Lu. According to Xu Shen and Duan Yucai, the Chinese word “kou” corresponds to “he”. When the music is harmonious, it is called “su” in Chinese. And “su” is usually replaced by “he”. The Chinese word “tong” means being oppressed unwillingly in ancient times. “He” means getting along well with others without loss of the individual ;while “tong” means doing absolutely as the others do. The old Chinese sentence “君子和而不同,小人同而不和” may be put into modem Chinese with the corresponding meaning that gentlemen get along well with others without blind agreement; while that villains do not get along well with others but agree with others blindly. When we use this sentence, we should notice that all feelings should be expressed properly. Only in that case, can the Chinese word “he” can be called.
