The Shore of the Syrtes is Gracq's masterpiece. In this novel, Gracq makes use of the subtle image of ″the Shore″ to represent the feelings and ideas that he intends to convey. This study, using French thematics as the basic approach of literary criticism, revolving around the image of ″the Shore″ in The Shore of the Syrtes, attempts to decode and interpret the time, the space and the characters in The Shore of the Syrtes in order to explore the ″borderline″ writing in the novel, and to gain insights into Gracq's poetic world.
