On the Social Control over the Rural Areas in Weihai During the British Lease

20世纪初期的中国乡村有一个重大的变化,即国家竭尽全力、企图加深并加强其对乡村社会的控制。但国家权力扩张的过程也即是“国家政权内卷化”的过程,国家政权在某些方面的加强导致自身的削弱和控制的失败。通过英租威海卫时期国家权力对威海乡村社会控制的加强为个案来说明国家与地方政权关系的演变。

One significant change in rural areas in China early in the 20^th century is that state control over such places was increasingly tightened. So the process of the state power augmentation is also the process of the state power involution, and its enhancement in certain field results in corruption and the outbreak of revolutions. This paper is intended to study the evolution of the relationship between the central government and local government by analyzing the state control over rural society in Weihal during the British lease.
