Recent years have obtained significant progress in the develop-ment and application of new,industrially important aromatic engineering plastics,thermoplastic materials,liquid crystalline polymers,and membrane materials.Many of the monomers for these materials can be prepared from one to four-ring aromatics from coal and coal liquid,such as alkylated benzenes,naphthalene,biphenyl,anthrancene,phenanthrene, pyrene,phenol,and carbazole,Especially,important are 2,6-dialkylnaphthalenes,4,4’-dialkyhiphenyls,and 1,4-dialkyben-zenes,so,it is important to explore the routes and methods for developing aroma-tics polymers which are difficult to obtain or not available from petroleum or natur al gas, The main objective of this paper is to interpret the opportunities to develop aromatic polymers. These high-value chemicals and materials from coal and coal li-quids could contribute significant to high-technology development.If so,new con-cepts of coal are required and a new branch of coal chemistry will be established in the next century.
