煤炭是一种重要的固体燃料与化学工业原料，煤炭的开发应用与化学、化工有密切的关系。内蒙古地区煤炭资源丰富，根据有关史料与出土文物推断，内蒙古地区早在１３世纪七十年代之前，已懂得用煤炭作燃料。
