A broadly applicable operating chart for activated sludge secondary clarifier was recommended. The procedure for using the chart by treatment plant operators was illustrated with several examples. The operation examples showed how the controlled return sludge flow rate or variation of the activated sludge process could be implemented to ameliorate thickening overloaded conditions in operating secondary clarifier.
