The oil industry of Taiwan has a long history, whose early accounts deal mainly with the natural gas in Jiayi of south Taiwan, and Fengshan and Danshui of north Taiwan. The area where oil was found and recovered earliest is Syukkoko of Miaoli. In the 50 years from 1895 to 1945 when Japanese invaders occupied Taiwan, three large-scale oil surveys were conducted, with 251 wells drilled, 7 oilfields found and opened up, and 1.209 million bbl of oil and 1040 million cubic meters of gas plundered. After the recovery of Taiwan, a number of new oilfields were found both on land ane offshore. By 1986, 19 oil and gas fields had been found and developed. During the 40 years between 1946 and 1986, 33980 million cubic meters of gas were produced per year on an average and the highest output of 1976 million cubic meters of gas in 1978. From 1946 to 1988, 31.536 tons of oil were produced, with 75000 tonsper ear on an average and the highest output of 218400 tons in 1977.
