Abstract In June 1992, the leaders of countries all over the world reached the common sense of 'sustainable development' at the United Nations Earth Summit held in Rio, Brazil. In November 1993, Japan issued the Environment Basic Law which proposed to 'construct a society of sustainable development with less environmental load and sound economic growing'. The paper reviewed the current countermeasures which Japanese industry adopted. The main subjects are: (1)Positive efforts which Japanese industry made in line with the Earth Charter; (2)Countermeasures to wastes; (3) International cooperation in environmental neld; (4) Nature conservation; (5) International standardlization of environmental management; and (6) Thoughts of Japanese industry to implement the Enveronment Basic Law.
