ifteen patients of mean age 55 (range 32～76) years with rectal cancer (Dukes A : B :C,7 : 6 : 2) underwent low anterior resectionwith colorectal or coloanal anastonioses usingthe double stapling technique from May 1985to October 1992. In this group. the averagedistance of tumor from the anus was strange 5～1) cm. A protecting transverse loopcolostomy was fashioned in one patient. Therewas no operative mortality. Clinicalanastomotic leakage occured in one patient(6%). Three (one Dukes’B, two Dukes’ C)died from pelvic recurrence and metastaiccancer within 2 years after operation. Theothers were survived with free tumor.Continence was achived in 14 while 1 hadminor impairment of control. The doublestapling technique provides a safe method thatis over the other stapler techniques for rectalreconstruction near the linea pectinata. Weadvocate that the procedure in selectedpatients with low and middle rectal cancermust not compromise the radicality of theoperation.
