On the Historical Division of Libraries and Their Corresponding Features

结合信息社会图书馆形态的研究,对图书馆的历史分期及其形态特征作了论述。

The inherent spiritual motivation for acquiring knowledge and information in the process of human communication and the productive force which controls such process are combined to push forward the development of libraries. The history of libraries may be divided into the following phases; 1. ancient closed libraries---the period of book storing house; 2. thephase of recent open-system libraries; 3. modern libraries which largely take the form of automation and network in conveying document information; 4. the phase of future libraries characterized by networked collective information establishments. In the process of modernization, contemporary libraries will integrate some of its business with social information industry. Such integration does not mean the end of libraries. Instead, it will strengthen overall library functions.
