Three beef cows were treated with pregnant mare serum gonadotrophin(PMSG)incombination with prostaglandin F_2α and rabbit antiserum against PMSG to induce twingstarted on day 10 after the second postpartum estrus.Blood samples were harvested viaindwelling jugular cannulae at 10 minute intervals for consecutive 2 hours every dayfrom day 10 to the end of the first postpartum estrous cycle,and at 30 minute intervalsduring the second and third estruses.The levels of β-endorphin in sera were measuredby a radioimmunoassay method.The results are shown as follows.(1) Pulsatile secre-tions of β-endorphin were detected in peripheral blood of cows during the secondpostpartum estrus;(2) The level of β-endorphin increased in blood of cows treatedfor twinning:(3)The increase of β-endorphin was positively related to the number ofunovulated follicles.
