The paper explores the problems of greenway planning in Bratislava, capital of Slovakia and discusses the meanings of greenways in modern urban landscape. Bratislava`s traditional landscape witnesses strong development pressure from nineties of last century till today. Vineyards on the slopes of Small Carpathians, which played substantial role in the city image and created part of its cultural identity, disappear as they are located in the heart of the city and occupy the most valuable land for residential purposes. Green spaces along Danube are threatened for same reason; embankment space is the most interesting space for development. To identify core contemporary problems of Bratislava`s greenways preserving and planning, process of spatial planning at local level is examined. Results show the gaps in comprehension of greenways, planning for linear corridors, between landscape ecologists, landscape architects and urban planners. Ways to reduce these gaps, for example enhancement of greenways perception as multifunctional corridors are discussed.
