论《世说新语》重言词的英译

On English Translation of Reduplicative Words in Shih-shuo Hsin-yü

相比先秦汉语,《世说新语》中的重言词数量已大大减少,且内容多与品评清议有关,重言词的使用增强了语言的表现力与音韵美,其英译本在翻译这些重言词时,通过对应、变通、转换音韵、舍形存意等方法实现了本书的文学、语言学和美学价值。

Comparing with the Chinese language in the Pre-Qin Dynasty,the reduplicative words are much less used in Shih-shuo Hsin-yü,and most are principled criticisms on certain characters.The reduplicative words enhanced the expressiveness and the beauty of rhyme.In its English translation,A New Account of Tales of the World,the translator applied different methods such as correspondence,flexibility,phonological transition,or shaping up with meaning to the translation of the duplicative words,which realize the literary,linguistic and aesthetic value of the book.
