The U. S. dyestuff industry remained declining in recent years, the total turnout dropped to 119 thousand tons in 2003 from 166 thousand tons in 2000, about 9.7% of the world market share, and 24% of dyes was exported. The price also kept dropping and the consumption of dyestuffs was decreasing too, the apparent consumption in 2003 was 184 thousand tons, about 132 thousand tons of 100% product. The consumption was 12.7% of the world total consumption, 50% of them was imported. 40% of the imported dyes came from China and India. None of the dyes was produced by chemical synthesis in the United State except the acid and reactive dyes, others were all the imported dyes and were to be formulated and commercialized, the amount would be about 75%-80% of the turnout. After being reformed during a period of 6 years the major dye suppliers in the U.S. market are DyStar, Ciba and Clariant. The U.S. dyestuff industry was on a significant decline, mostly due to the dramatic downturn in the textile dye segment, the impact of increasing dye imports, the sharp reduction in the profits of dyes and also the environmental factors.
