The name “Guanzi” refers either to Guan Zhong (? -645 B. C.) or to the Book of Guanzi, which is believed to be a miscellaneous work compiled by Guan Zhong's disciples during the Warring States Period (475-221 B. C.). However, the philosophical reflections as well as linguistic ideas revealed in the book may partly be traced back to Guan Zhong himself, and from Guang Zhong to Laozi and Confucius a continuation of thinking on the same issues such as “name” and “rectifying names” can easily be seen. Contemplating the origin of names and the relationship between a name and the thing it represents, Guan Zhong held that “Each thing must have a body, and each body a name from the very beginning” - a naturalistic view which might have exerted considerable influence upon subsequent thinkers, Laozi and Confucius among others.
