A new n-hexadecyl-β-D-xylopyranoside(1) and a known compound cholest-5-en-3β-ol(2),were isolated from the red alga Laurencia karlae Zhang et Xia collected from the Nashan Islands in the South China Sea.Compound 1 is a white solid,C_(21)H_(42)O_5,m.p.94.0～95.0℃,[a]_D=-25.0℃(CHCl_3,c 0.032).The structure of 1 was determined on the basis of elemental analysis,IR, MS,￣1H NMR,￣(13)C NMR,(DEPT),and￣(13)C NMR data in comparison with the known compounds.
