The image of mirror is quite frequently seen in J. P. Sartre's (1905-1980) literary works. While it is often endowed with unique meanings by Sartre, the mirror implies an important philosophical proposition-how does one recognize his/her ego? For Sartre, “ego”is merely some ideal state of being rather than the concrete. Simply regarding the mirror image as one's real “ego” will certainly lead to “self-deceit”.
