On the cultural communication between the traditional male scholars and the traditional actresses

中国男性文士的权力渴求中,都包含着性的因素,而当被权力系统所边缘甚至驱逐的情形中,男性文士大多会产生一种替代性的性的要求,以应证自身一种虚幻的性权力,女性优伶由于独特社会存在状态,自然成为男性文士性权力的一个重要替代对象,从而构成两者之间的密切交往关系,而且,颇含一种文化意味,或聚宴品艺,或作词相赠,或传播诗赋,甚至产生爱情佳话,形成一种男性文士和女性优伶的精神互慰关系,共同抚平遭受挫折和压抑的内心伤痛。

In the traditional Chinese male scholars＇ longing for the powers, sex was an important factor. While they were in the condition of being expelled, most of the male scholars would have another requirement for sex in order to prove that they had an illusory power for sex. The actresses, having a unique social status, naturally became an important substitute for the sexual power of the male scholars, thus forming a close relationship between them. This kind of relationship was manifested in having parties, writing poems, communicating with each other and even having love stories. All of the above had a cultural content and formed a spiritual relationship between the male scholars and the actresses. They comforted and placated each other for their frustrations.
