Preliminary Analyses of the Connotation of "Wenqi"

“文气”是中国古代文论中应用较为广泛而其涵义又较难准确把握的一个术语,对它的正确理解不但是对中国古代文论中有关“文气”理论进行现代转换和继承的前提,也是全面了解古代文论的内在精神和思维的重要条件。

“Wenqi” is a term in ancient literary theories which is commonly used but difficult to grasp its connotation. Proper understanding of it is not only a premise and basis of inheriting the theory of “Wenqi” in ancient Chinese literary theories but also a significant condition for us gaining an overall comprehension of the inherent essence and thought pattern of the ancient literary theories. This paper, on the basis of a brief review of the development of the theory concerning “Wenqi”, makes an attempt to define the connotation of it and discusses from several aspects.
