Interruptions and overlaps in mixed conversations among young people are recorded in this study. Frequencies of interruptions and overlaps, successful cooperation in overlaps, frequencies of successful interruptions, and successful switches of topic after an interruption are analyzed. Results show that there is no obvious difference between male and female subjects in frequency of interruptions in mixed conversations. However, successful interruptions by male subjects are obviously more than those by females. For males, interruption is one of the means to switch topic in conversations. Based on the findings of former studies, social origins of these differences are discussed.
