This paper illustrates the features of Afro-American literature in the three flowering periods of the 20th century . In the 1920s and 1930s the Harlem Renaissance approached dualism. In the 1940s and 1960s the “protest novels” shifted to “self-conscious novels”. In the 1970s and 1980s Afro-American literature turned to quest for personal wholeness and harmonious community. At the same time, the paper discusses the aesthetic trends of Afro-American literature combining the traditional with the modern, the indigenous with the exotic.
