Migrant Workers in China:Spanning Rural and Urban Areas

摘要 While rural-urban migrant workers have made great contrbution to the development and prosperity in the urban and coastal areas of China,they are predomiantly not the permanent residents in the places of destination.They are not urban resients not only in terms of their household registration status,but more significantly in terms of income,living arrangement,social security,health care,and education of their children,which are vastly different from the urban local residents.Many of them will finally to their place of origin,and remittance,techniques and new ideas they gained from their employment and living in urban areas have played an important role in socio-economic life in their hometowns.In population classification,they are different from both the rural and urban local residents,spanning rural and urban areas,a population group having close connection with both rural and urban areas.Marginalisation of their living status has been an increasing concern.Six scholars who have long had interest in this area are invited to write on some of the major issues and concerns of the rural-urban migrant workers.
