The cross-cultural corpus study of one particular concept “word” in Chinese and English, covered in this article, explores ten inherent conceptual metaphors, such as “words are food/drink”, “words are object”, etc. The findings verify the claim that human cognition is metaphorical from the way human conveys the unknown, the unfamiliar, the complicated, and the abstract in terms of the known, the familiar, the simple and the tangible. In addition, there is an analysis of metaphorical extension of word family members with regard to prototypical categorization, followed by cognition norm and semantic typology concerning “word”.
