We have developed a new UPS (uninterruptible power supply) based on a concept adopting series-parallel processing. Unlike conventional series-parallel circuits, to which a transformer is generally added to adjust supply voltage, the new method allows the adjustment of mains voltage without using a series transformer. It is also effective not only for the reduction in size and weight of the equipment but also for the improvement of conversion efficiency. We named it Dual-Conversion method and we are now working toward the development of products targeting at IA server systems. A prototype was tested and the following performance, which is not inferior to full-time inverter UPS, was obtained: mains voltage range; ±25% or ±20%, switching time at power interruption; 0 ms, output voltage accuracy; ±3%. Furthermore, conversion efficiency of 95%, 5% higher than the full-time inverter UPS, has been achieved with 700VA/350W standalone equipment. The loss of the equipment is small. Since insulated series transformer adopting commercial frequency is not used, the height of IU and 2U, the top class in the industry, has been achieved with 19-inch rack type 1400VA and 3000VA equipment respectively.
