Basic Problems Confronting Chinese Nationality Studies

中国民族学尤其是少数民族研究,当前的基本研究范式主要还是一种“族别”的研究。在讨论中国的文化问题时,我们必须同时意识到现代中国之国家层面的“一体化”和各民族以及各地域社会的“多样性”之间可能存在的所有复杂的问题。国民认同和一体化,意味着中国各族人民所共享的文化与文明的成分及因素不断得以成长和壮大,而多样性则意味着各民族、各个地域社会或各种人们共同体的文化传统的存续与再生。

Current nationality studies in China are based on the paradigm of ＂individual nationalities＂. However, according to this author, we should be more aware of the complicated relationship between national ＂unification＂ and national ＂diversity＂ in modern China. ＂Unification＂ refers to the steady increase of cultural and civil factors common to atl nationalities, and ＂diversity＂ to the survival and regeneration of cultural traditions unique with particular nationalities.
