Using the Greek spiritual concept of freedom and pursuit of happiness as well as that of emancipation of human mind and humanism descending from the Renaissance, Hardy makes a trenchant criticism of the Christian doctrines and the hypocritical church which suffocated personality, free thoughts and suppressed human nature. In the meantime, his perfect familiarity with the Bible results in a great use of the biblical idioms and images that imbue his works with a heavy religious atmosphere. This paper makes a detailed survey of Hardy＇s views on religion as represented in Tess of the D＇ Urbervilles and the biblical influence upon his writing.
