ZrO 2 supported copper catalysts, in which the ZrO 2 was prepared by supercritical drying method, exhibited high activity and selectivity for methanol synthesis from CO/2H 2. TPR and XRD results showed that there were two kinds of copper oxide in the CuO/ZrO 2: one was bulk copper oxide and the other was well dispersed one. The latter one was the key active component; it could be reduced at lower temperature and its reduced product was well dispersed copper which was readily oxidized at room temperature in air.
